Mariska is training teachers in the use of sounds within the initial reading process (‘segmenting and blending’). Via lesson observations and feedback sessions she helps the teachers to apply the knowledge and skills, gained in trainings, to their daily teaching practice. Teachers are enthusiastic: they have learnt the sounds of letters for as well Chichewa as English, have made teaching and learning resources (like letter and word cards) and teach the learners to read via pronunciation of separate letters or letter pairs. The reading results of learners have strongly improved.
May 2011 Mariska has facilitated presentations about teaching and learning resources and instruction within the initial reading process at the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) for professionals, who are rewriting the teachers’ guides and learners’ books for the standards 1 and 2 in Malawi.
Other areas of attention within literacy are: writing, second language acquisition, reading comprehension, communication skills and increase of vocabulary.
